CULTURAL

Orchestra

The orchestra at FCI is open to students who learn traditional orchestral instruments such as violin, flute, trumpet etc, and suitably talented students are encouraged to join. Practices are held weekly and the orchestra performs at special occasions over the year such as Grandparents’ Day concert, Cluster Festival, Intermediate Schools Instrumental Sharing Day, and Prize Giving. This year, the orchestra will have a role in the school production.

Flute group

There are usually enough students learning the flute to form a ‘Flute Group’ every year. This group practises once a week and learns a variety of pieces suitable to be performed at short notice, e.g. when the school has special visitors. They also perform out in the community such as at the Summer Festival and at the F.C. Probus Club.

Rock Band

Students with a talent in playing rock band instruments are encouraged to form rock bands. These bands practice hard over the year and perform at The Intermediate Battle of the Bands Competition and at the Councilors’ Assembly in term 4.

Other Groups

Various other musical performing groups are formed depending on the skills and talents of the students attending at the time.

Choir

Choir holds open auditions for anyone interested and it often boosts confidence and allows students to develop in the comfort of a group situation. Over a two year cycle the choir sings as part of the Kids for Kids Concert with Suzanne Prentice; the local Cluster Festival comprised of our local cluster schools and the APPA concert at the Town Hall. The choir also performs for a range of school visitors and events as well as being part of our Final Assembly.

Maori Cultural Group

Kapa haka at Farm Cove Intermediate, aims to introduce and extend students knowledge of tikanga (protocols), waiata(songs), haka (dance performance) and language of all things Maori. We practice weekly and on occasion we perform powhiri (welcomes), for guests to the school.

We perform at various events throughout the year, including the Koanga Festival, (Spring Festival) and the summer festival at Pakuranga. We are very fortunate to have two top class tutors, Koro Percy Reedy (Ngatai Porou), and Whaea Lola Thomas, (Nga Puhi).
